Course Outline:
- No experience is necessary for this jam packed painting and mixed media class working with encaustic wax, which can be applied to many surfaces including wood, paper, and ceramics. Step-by-step projects will illustrate techniques involving collage, stencils, image transfers, layering, incising and textured finishes using wax in an assortment of vivid colors. Advanced techniques will include image transfers and working with a resist to produce distinctive results.
Day 1 - Fusing, Layering, Texture and Incising
Basic Techniques Well start with a quick warm up exercise to help you learn basic wax layering and fusing techniques on panels using a heat gun using vividly colored wax. Well collage with wax instead of glue to incorporate images, fabric and dried plants once you get used to working with the wax. Dont worry if you arent a painter. Ill have lots of materials available for you to play with, and you can work in any style you choose. Feel free to bring your own photographs to collage with too!
Creating Texture and Incising Lines This section will be devoted to roughing up your perfectly smooth wax! Well use everyday objects like jar lids and window screening to make beautiful surface marks, then layer them on top of each other using colored wax. Well also practice incising lines and filling them with a different color wax.
Working with Photographs For this special project youll need to bring a favorite black and while photograph on absorbent, heavyweight paper to us as the base of a painting. In this project well use clear wax and a variety of surface treatments like colored pencils, chalk and oil pastels to add subtle color for an antique look. Ill also show you how I print my photographs to tissue paper for a unique look and give you some pre-printed tissue to use in learning the technique so you can try it at home.
Day 2 – Advanced Techniques
Wax Transfers Think youve tried every type of image transfer imaginable? Think again. Transferring images and drawings onto wax is quick and easy, and gives a beautiful effect. With some practice you can even build up several images between layers of wax. Ill show you two different way to make transfers so youll always have just the right technique to make it work.
Crackle Finish The crackle finish is a resist you paint onto warm wax then super heat until it cracks. This requires the use of a propane torch so if you aren't familiar with how to use one you'll learn that too. Ill also share with you how to make your own custom colors at home.
Safety and Set-up Well discuss how encaustic paint is made with beeswax, resin and pigment. Ill show you what you need to get started painting at home, including a discussion on safety.
All participants will receive instructions ahead of class on how to prepare your photographs so you can personalize your work, as well as detailed handouts of the techniques we go over in the workshop. I hope to see you there! Linda
